Lukas Condren, a University of Ulster placement student, joined the Grand Scale team as a Digital Marketing Coordinator and having spent a year working with us, we asked him to share his experience!
Why did you choose Grand Scale for your placement year?
I chose to work at Grand Scale for my placement year because I wanted to gain experience in the industry and after speaking to Ro and Leanne I knew that this was the place I wanted to be! Grand Scale pushes the boundaries in marketing and I wanted to learn from industry experts.
Being a small business, operated by two seasoned marketeers with 40 years’ experience between them, I knew I was going to obtain unrivalled marketing knowledge and skills - especially being so heavily involved in a wide range of interesting projects.
Grand Scale’s client portfolio includes a diverse range of innovative tech companies ranging across sectors including medtech, climate tech and fintech. Novel companies like Antennaware, TapSOS, Axial3D, Umazi and Catagen. For me, this offers exposure to a range of companies across many industries and how marketing propels their business and helps them to grow internationally.
What’s it like working at Grand Scale?
At the beginning, it was definitely a steep learning curve, with a lot of it being totally new to me. But having Ro and Leanne guiding me, I really feel I was able to learn quickly and develop my skills at a rate I wouldn’t have if I was in a larger company. I’m also getting a real insight into what it takes to succeed in business.
What’s your favourite part of being part of the team?
I’ve been given anatomy to work on digital marketing projects and enjoy seeing the results of my contributions to Grand Scale. I’ve been encouraged to put my own creative thinking to use and contribute new ideas to the team e.g., I got a kick out of creating short animated videos to drive social engagement, website traffic and sales leads.
I love the fact that I’m able to constantly learn new things - every single day - so it’s never dull at Grand Scale. Being part of such a tight-knit group rather than just a small cog in a larger organisation, I feel I have been given opportunities to get a incredible insight in to all aspects of business, not just marketing. This sets me up well for progressing further in my professional career.
How has Grand Scale helped your marketing career?
Working at Grand Scale has allowed me to discover the power of strategic marketing and how it can be the driving force for business growth, and how to develop campaigns to generate sales and real business return on investment.
Over the last 12 months, I have fast-tracked my learning and development in B2B marketing – and I’ve definitely been upskilled on the latest marketing approaches. I can now build digital campaigns on automation platforms. I’ve driven lead generation activities and have the know-how to build an online brand profile.
It has also provided me with networking opportunities in the industry that helped me get further insight into where I want to take my marketing career.
Can you add what part of marketing do you like most? How has this year shaped your thoughts of a marketing career in the future?
My placement year at Grand Scale helped me realise that I really enjoy managing end-to-end marketing campaigns, from setting SMART goals to developing a campaign plan and using marketing automation tools to prospect and execute marketing campaigns.
Through this experience, it’s allowed me to better clarify my career goals. I’m much more confident and knowledgeable in marketing and know want I want to achieve in the future.
